The name Kinsale comes from the Irish Ceann tSaile, meaning “Headland of the sea”. The town has a fascinating history.
The area’s roots trace back to early Christian monastic sites in the 6th century. Kinsale also has a history with Vikings, as the established the town as a trading post in the 10th century.
During the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, Kinsale was turned into a walled medieval port and interestingly, a hub for wine trade. Kinsale would remain one of Ireland’s most important and designated wine ports for centuries.
