Unique heritage – home to Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley
The land around Clew Bay once belonged to the O’Malley family. Grace O’Malley was born on Clare Island in 1530.
Against social mores, Grace was the fierce leader of a fleet of about 200 fighting men. Strategically located in the bay that saw trading ships coming from Scotland, the legend of the Pirate Queen began.
Westport House is located on one of the estates once owned by the O’Malleys. On the Westport Estate, you will find afamily attraction park inspired by the 16th-century pirate queen’s story.
Her legacy is also commemorated by a bronze sculpture, which you will be able to spot around Westport House.
