Inspired by ancient designs – a striking natural attraction
Installed by Californian artist James Turrell, this Irish hidden gem is located on the Liss Ard Estate in County Cork.
A peaceful retreat where the clouds meet the grass, Sky Garden was inspired by ancient Celtic, Egyptian, and Mayan designs. Set inside a huge crater with a granite plinth at the centre, where visitors are invited to lie and gaze up at the clouds.
Big enough for two people lying feet to feet with their heads resting on the raised slabs, Sky Garden offers the chance to disconnect from the chaos of modern life and reconnect with the natural world.
One of only two in the world – a unique Irish attraction
This unique Irish hidden gem is one of only two in the world, and it blends together Ireland’s natural beauty and ancient history.
Set on the site of an ancient ring fort, visitors can access the gardens through a 32-metre-long passage and stairs that lead to the large basin.
The garden was completed in 1992 but still remains almost untouched by tourists visiting County Cork.
After completing the garden, Turrell said, “The most important thing is that inside turns into outside and the other way around, in the sense that relationships between the Irish landscape and the Irish sky changes.”
