Record number of Irish nominations for the Oscars 2023

Ireland has swept up 14 nominations for the Academy Awards, making history with An Cailín Ciúin being the first Irish-language film to be nominated for best international film.

Ireland and its talented filmmakers, actors, musicians, and more are set to make history at the Oscars 2023 with a record number of nominations.

14 to be exact, including a whopping nine nominations for Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin.

Other nominations include Paul Mescal for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun and the Irish short film An Irish Goodbye for Best Live-Action Short.

Ireland has made a little piece of history at this year’s Oscars with a record 14 nominations across a number of categories.

The Banshees of Inisherin broke a record in itself for the greatest number of nominations an Irish film has ever received.

The 2022 hit overtook Belfast (2021) and In the Name of the Father (1993), which both previously held the record with seven nominations each.

Furthermore, an outstanding piece of history has been made the first-ever Irish-language film to be shortlisted in the International Film category.

Colin Farrell has been very successful this awards season, having been nominated for both a Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild gong for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Now nominated in the Best Actor category at the Academy Awards, it begs the question, is his performance Oscar-worthy?

Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams read out the 95th Oscar Nominations Announcement yesterday, 24 January. Along with Farrell in the same category, Paul Mescal receives a nomination for Aftersun.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan receive a nomination each for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Kerry Condon has received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for The Banshees, while Martin McDonagh receives one for Best Director. The same film also gets a nomination for Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.

An Irish Goodbye receives a nomination for Best Live Action Short, while An Cailín Ciúin is in the running for Best International Feature Film.

A night of fierce competition is sure to be had, with Martin McDonagh up against the likes of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All at Once in the Best Actor category.

This is an incredible movie that The Banshees of Inisherin goes up against in a number of other categories, including Best Picture, Best Actress, supporting roles, and more.

Hosted by US talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars 2023 will take place on 12 March 2023 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Will you be tuning in for a night of history in the making for Ireland on the big screen?
