New York City’s Dead Rabbit’s reputation speaks for itself. The Manhattan establishment enjoys renown as the world’s best bar and attracts both locals and visitors in one of the world’s most iconic cities.

This month, it will take over a distillery in another of the world’s iconic cities – Dublin. For one night only, Roe and Co in the Irish capital will offer “a genuine, fun, and irreverent” drinking experience.

The Dead Rabbit was opened in 2013 by Belfast natives Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry. They named their New York venture after the notorious gang – the Dead Rabbits – who operated in the poverty-stricken Five Points area of Manhattan during the 1800s.

They outlined their aims for the Dead Rabbit to be “a fiercely Irish [bar] with an American accent”, and this ethos has seen their establishment pick up no fewer than eight Tales of The Cocktail Spirited Awards, including World’s Best Bar.

The pair parted ways in 2022, with McGarry now on his own. He plans for national expansion in the US, beginning with a location in Austin, Texas, later this year.

Like the Dead Rabbit, Roe & Co’s name also refers to the history of its home city. George Roe’s Dublin distillery was instrumental to the 19th-century golden era of Irish whiskey, and the company was once Ireland’s premier whiskey exporter.

The distillery closed its doors in 1926, and all that remains today is its windmill and a pear tree.

Roe & Co opened its distillery in 2019, not far from the Thomas Street site of George Roe’s original location. The name was chosen in homage to George Roe’s legacy.

The world’s best bar will take over this Dublin distillery for one night only this month. The takeover is set to take place on Tuesday, 15 August, between 5 pm and 7:30 pm, and between 8:30 pm and 11 pm.

The distillery will include key elements of the New York Irish bar, and will offer Guinness, cocktails, food, and entertainment.

McGarry commented, “We are thrilled to bring our team to the Roe & Co Distillery this August, and welcome guests to experience modern Ireland meets New York in a genuine, fun, and irreverent way.

“It’s our pleasure to support Roe & Co and distilleries that are pioneering new processes and continuing to challenge the status quo to ensure Irish whiskey keeps thriving globally”.

Tickets are available from 12 pm (IST/BST) today (1 August) via Roe and Co’s website.
