As well as the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route, which winds its way along the north coast of Northern Ireland, has also been named.
By analysing the number of Instagram posts per mile of each route and studying over seven million hashtags on the social media platform, Pentagon Motor Group made a comprehensive list of the most popular and beautiful road trips in the world.
Alongside the two Irish road trips named among most beautiful in the world are popular routes in places like Australia, U.S.A., and U.A.E.
Other contenders – for the bucket list
Topping the list of most beautiful road trips in the world is the Great Ocean Road in Australia, which covers 255 km (157 miles) of road on the breathtaking Australian coastline.
Coming in second position is the 145 km (90 miles) Big Sur, U.S.A., which is considered the most scenic section of the Pacific Coast Highway, taking in views of the fantastic Californian coast.
In third place is the 11.km (7 miles) Jebel Hafeet, U.A.E., which rises 1,200m up into the surrounding mountains.
The Wild Atlantic Way – Ireland’s most popular tourist trail
One of the two Irish road trips named among the most beautiful in the world is the iconic Wild Atlantic Way.
Coming in eighth position, the 2,500 km (1,553 miles) stretch of road from County Donegal in the north to County Cork in the south is home to some of Ireland’s most spectacular attractions, including Slieve League, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Ring of Kerry.
At 853 pictures per mile, it is no surprise to those who have visited Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way that the route has been named among the world’s most beautiful roads.
The Causeway Coastal Route – a must-visit
Winding its way along the north coast of Northern Ireland, the Causeway Coast just made it into the top 20 most beautiful roads in the world, coming in at number 19.
Stretching from Belfast to Derry, this route takes in some of the most popular tourist attractions Northern Ireland has to offer, including the Giant’s Causeway and Dunluce Castle.
A must-visit, particularly for fans of the HBO hit show Game of Thrones, the 322 km (200 miles) long road boasts 244 pictures per mile.
