Just in time for Halloween, Condé Nast Traveller revealed their ultimate ranking of ’43 Most Haunted Places in the World’.
From spooky castles to underground graveyards and haunted hotels to frightening forests, they revealed some of the world’s most spine-tingling locations.
The international travel publication named two Irish locations among the most haunted places in the world. Therefore, cementing Ireland’s place as one of the world’s most perfect Halloween destinations.
One such location was Leap Castle in County Offaly. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, this haunting Irish castle has a horrifying backstory that is sure to make your hairs stand on end.
Condé Nast Traveller writes, “As legend has it, during a struggle for power within the O’Carroll clan (which had a fondness for poisoning dinner guests), one member plunged a sword into his brother, a priest, as he was holding mass in the castle’s chapel.”
Visitors to the castle can now visit this so-called ‘Bloody Chapel’. It is here that the ghost of the priest is said to haunt.
A historic prison ‒ the sight of 17 executions
Heading north, Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast was another one of the Irish locations ranked among the most haunted places in the world.
Opening in the Victorian era, the prison held some of the country’s most notorious prisoners throughout its 150 years of operation. Having been the sight of 17 executions, the ghosts of those hanged onsite are said to haunt the wings of the prison to this day.
