Tortilla Restaurant Review: Is it better than Boojum?

Tortilla is the latest addition to Belfast’s burrito scene. We headed down to try it because we wanted to know, is it better than Boojum?

Tortilla Restaurant Review: Is it better than Boojum?

Tortilla has over 80 locations across the UK and recently opened its first Northern Ireland store on Corn Market in Belfast City Centre.

So, of course, we had to go and try it out. We headed down at lunchtime to get a couple of burritos and find out the answer to our burning question – is Tortilla better than Boojum? Read on for our honest review.

Tortilla vs Boojum – battle of the burritos

Tortilla vs Boojum.

Boojum has been a staple in Belfast since opening its first store there in 2007, expanding since then to several cities throughout the country with 17 branches in total.

At the time of its opening, it was kind of revolutionary in the world of Irish fast food, as people had become used to the standard McDonald’s, KFC, and Burger King’s dotted around.

As such, for a long time, Boojum has reigned as the king of burritos in Ireland, with no real competition giving the chain a run for its money.

Now that Tortilla has opened in Belfast City Centre, we had to go down and try it to see if it compares to Boojum or if Boojum holds onto its place at the top.

Tortilla Restaurant Review – our honest opinion

Our Tortilla Restaurant review.

We headed down to Tortilla on a quiet enough Wednesday afternoon. Firstly, the interior décor surprised us as it has a lot more character and funky designs than we expected from the outside.

Another thing that struck us is that they offer £2.50 happy hour cocktails and beers between 5 pm and 8 pm for loyalty club members.

Those prices for alcohol are practically unheard of in Belfast City Centre and a massive selling point alone!

Tortilla is a California-style Mexican burrito and taco joint, so don’t go in expecting fully authentic Mexican food!

The food we ordered in Tortilla.

We opted for a burrito with rice and beans, pork and chorizo, sour cream, cheese, veg, and hot sauce, and a naked burrito, akin to Boojum’s burrito bowl, with vegan chilli, veg, guac, rice, beans, and pico de gallo.

Overall, for us, our burritos were a little lacking in flavour and substance. Across both meals, there was a little ‘umph’ missing. One thing we will say, though, is that the pico de gallo was delicious.

Ultimately, in our opinion, Boojum packs a lot more flavour. In short, is Tortilla better than Boojum? For us, no. Would we be willing to try it again? Definitely!

Conclusion – is Tortilla better than Boojum?

In our humble opinion, Tortilla isn’t better than Boojum. Boojum has been the reigning champion in the world of Mexican fast food in Ireland for years now, so there is a lot to live up to.

One thing we will say is that competition will continue to steadily trickle in, so Boojum had better up its game.

Regardless of our take, we recommend getting down to try Tortilla out for yourself. Especially between 5 pm and 8 pm daily for the £2.50 happy hour drinks. (offer ends 31/08/23).
