Athlone is a great little town in the centre of Ireland. Sitting on the banks of the River Shannon this historical town not only offers stunning views but plenty of activities and shopping also. Whether you’re a local at work or a tourist on holiday, the one thing both days will have in common is the time set aside for a decent meal. Athlone has no shortage of establishments to fulfil that need. There is an immense variety, from fine dining, to fast food, take away, to bar food, local grub to international cuisine. Here is a look at our top 5 picks below of restaurants for foodies in Athlone.
5. Las Radas Wine & Tapas Bar
A relatively new addition to Athlone’s gastronomy community. This unique restaurant has made its mark. In what is self-described as “Not your typical Spanish tapas” this eatery is sure to have something for everyone. If you have trouble deciding on just one dish, then this is the place for you. Their boards or sharing platters give you the option of sampling several different dishes for the indecisive among the group. The wide selection of food means that they can cater for even the fussiest, most diverse groups. You will also find some obscure choices such as octopus, liver pâté, falafel and pigs ears to tempt the adventurous side. The warm welcome, friendly staff, great selection of wine and late opening hours make this the perfect spot for a late-night refuelling before hitting the town.

4. Top Deck Bistro
This busy nautical-themed restaurant offers much more than seafood. While the décor may resemble that of a ship, there is much more to see here. Their reasonable priced Early Bird Menu means that it is perfect for those on a budget who don’t want to skimp on flavour. While the décor reflects the fact that they specialise in seafood, you can be assured that all other dishes are prepared to the same high standard as the catch of the day. The presentation is next to none with great care, and precision put into constructing your meal. The fajitas are delivered on a still sizzling pan. All dishes are fresh to order. The wine menu also contains a food match section, advising on how to experience the full effect of flavours from both your food and your drink. If that is not enough. Their dessert menu is in a league of its own. From the usual staples of ice-cream and pie to my personal favourites of Toblerone Cheesecake and Meringue & Maltesers Mess. Your sweet tooth is sure to be on a high.

1. Il Colosseo
From Asia to Europe, Athlone houses some fantastic authentic cuisine from around the world. This Italian restaurant serves some of the best pizza and pasta dishes you will ever have. Not alone that but their portion sizes will ensure you are filled to satisfaction before venturing on with the rest of your day. The décor reflects the Italian vibe with murals and pictures of Italy and Rome on the walls. The Italian waiters are also on hand to help with the pronunciation of some of the dishes. Handy tip: If like me your Italian leaves little to be desired for all dishes are numbers, so I just call out the corresponding number. This fine dining Italian restaurant offers some of the most flavoursome homemade pasta sauces I have ever had. A great side to any dish is their Italian potatoes, crisped to perfection. Their thin crusted pizza offers the perfect ratio of crust to toppings and the calzone is just a cheesy feast of your favourite fillings. A lovely addition to all of this is the outdoor balcony, which has been available more and more to customers recently due to the fine weather we have been experiencing.
