The Worst Street in Dublin, According to Reddit

Dubliners have spoken, and one notorious street has been named and shamed as the worst in the capital. Locals shared stories of madness, mischief, and mayhem in equal measure.

Ireland’s capital is loved for its rich history, friendly people, and cultural buzz.
While many areas, from St. Stephen’s Green to the newly revamped Docklands, have flourished in recent years, some streets in the city centre continue to face long-running challenges.

So, what’s the worst street in Dublin? A recent Reddit thread has brought one particular spot into unwanted focus.

A tale of two cities – Dublin’s split personality

Dublin is a city of contrasts. The southside is full of trendy cafés, high-end shops, and leafy neighbourhoods, while parts of the north inner city continue to struggle with social problems and urban neglect.

When one curious Reddit user on r/AskIreland asked the simple question, “What’s the worst street in Dublin?”, the replies came pouring in.

The post gathered hundreds of comments, and while several infamous areas were mentioned, one street stood out above all others, Talbot Street.

Just off O’Connell Street, Talbot Street connects Dublin’s main shopping area to Connolly Station. Once a lively stretch of independent shops and old-school pubs, it’s now often described as a hotspot for anti-social behaviour, substance abuse, and general disorder.

Talbot Street claims the crown – an “absolutely dire” street

Reddit users didn’t hold back. One person wrote, “I’ve worked on Talbot Street for years now. It’s absolutely dire. The shop workers deserve medals for putting up with the abuse and harassment from local troublemakers.”

Another added bluntly, “I’ve seen both a deceased person and someone relieving themselves in broad daylight on Talbot Street. That takes the prize for me.”

Many pointed out that while the street has received investment, it hasn’t made a lasting difference. As one commenter put it, “They’ve spent loads doing up the pavements, but there’s no upkeep. It could be a brilliant street if properly managed.”

Others took a more humorous tone, with one suggesting, “Talbot Street should be declared an independent republic at this stage.”

Still, not everyone agreed. Some defended the street, saying its bad reputation is a bit exaggerated. “Talbot Street gets too much hate,” one user wrote. “I’ve walked it daily for years with no bother. There are great places to eat and interesting characters if you actually look.”

Other contenders – Gardiner Street, Labre Park, and beyond

Labre Park, Ballyfermot

Although Talbot Street topped the list, other streets weren’t far behind. Gardiner Street, just around the corner, was described by one user as being “in a league of its own.”

Labre Park in Ballyfermot also came up repeatedly. The Traveller accommodation site left some users shocked after seeing it on Google Street View, with one comment reading, “This place takes the crown. It’s like something out of a film.”

Dorset Street, Buckingham Street, and Parnell Street all featured heavily too, with locals mentioning aggressive panhandling, open drug use, and poor sanitation.

One user summed up their experience vividly, “Standing on Buckingham Street, I saw a rat that acted like it owned the pavement. It didn’t even flinch, that was my cue to leave.”

A deeper issue – Dublin’s urban divide

Gardiner Street, Dublin City Centre

Many Redditors felt the problems around Talbot Street reflect bigger issues in Dublin’s city centre.

“The entire north inner city is a national embarrassment,” one commenter said bluntly. “The difference between here and somewhere like Stephen’s Green is unreal. It feels like two different cities.”

Another added, “There’s so much potential, but with the mix of homelessness, addiction, and lack of Garda presence, people just don’t feel safe. It’s not one street, it’s years of neglect catching up.”

Others urged perspective. “Every city has its rough bits,” wrote one Dubliner. “Dublin still has far more good than bad, it’s a brilliant place to live.”

Can Talbot Street be turned around?

Not everyone has written off Dublin’s most criticised street. Some pointed to new cafés, bars, and hotels that have popped up in the area and efforts by Dublin City Council to tidy things up.

One hopeful commenter said, “The Morris Bar is a gem, and there are some great cheap eats. With proper investment and policing, the street could really change.”

Others were more sceptical. “We’ve heard it all before,” one long-time resident said. “Every few years someone says Talbot Street is improving, but it never lasts.”

The final verdict – flawed but familiar

After plenty of debate, the Reddit consensus was clear. Talbot Street takes the title of Dublin’s worst street.

For some, it’s a symbol of how the city centre has slipped, marked by neglect and disorder. For others, it’s simply part of Dublin’s rough-around-the-edges charm, a place that still has life, character, and stories worth telling.

As one Reddit user put it best, “Talbot Street might be chaotic, but it’s our chaos, and that’s Dublin for you.”
