Five Pubs & Bars in Portlaoise You Need To Visit Before You Die

Portlaoise is one of the fastest developing towns in Ireland with a high percentage of the population under the age of 18. A short spin to Dublin as well as impressive transport links to many counties, this busy spot is a prime location for commuters who want the best of both worlds.

The majority of popular restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs are on Main Street and with regular trains running from Dublin’s Heuston station, Portlaoise town has been painted red by many a hen or stag during their last weekend of freedom.

But which one of the craic-filled, toe-tapping watering holes should you choose? Here are our top five pubs to consider before letting your hair down in Portlaoise.

5. The Welcome Inn

This Market Square pub does exactly what it says on the tin! Proudly offering a “cold pint and a warm chair’ to visitors, it’s like stepping into an old pair of slippers once you settle down in this place. The only problem is you won’t want to leave!

Enjoy some good old-fashioned soup and a sandwich washed down with one of the best pints of Guinness in town and you might find yourself staying longer than you planned.

Sports fan? This is the place to be, with all major events shown and comfy seats to watch them from. Traditional live music at the weekend brings this cosy little spot to life …. not to be missed for a true ‘home from home’ experience.

4. The Funky Munky

Stay cool this summer with a delicious cocktail at The Funky Munky in the heart of Portlaoise. Enjoy a superb line up of musicians and soak up the atmosphere until late at this stylish venue.

A hot spot for the more discerning customer, daily specials and a variety of quality gins are by far part of the attraction. Not to mention the suave décor and chilled vibes. So for an occasion to remember or simply to try out that new frock, this classy joint is top notch.

3. E.J. Morrissey’s

One of three vintage bars, Morrissey’s in Portlaoise is a great place to mingle with the locals. With rustic wooden tables and a plethora of traditional memorabilia, you will get a real sense of how traditional Irish pubs were once the place to buy your groceries with your pint.

The sister pub, in nearby Abbeyleix, was awarded pub of the year last month while the one in Carlow offers a choice of quirky snugs to enjoy a cheeky Guinness in.

Morrissey’s in Portlaoise combines all the above along with showing all major rugby and football events. Located in Market Square, it’s a great spot to take a moment to appreciate Irish culture at its best.

2. Sally Gardens

If it’s the full ‘craic agus ceol’ experience you’re after, you will find it hard to bypass Sally’s during a night out in this town. It is a charming Irish bar with a great atmosphere and ice-cold beer.

The staff team will welcome you like one of their own and you can enjoy some friendly banter at the bar or soak up the atmosphere of Main Street at one of the many tables outside. With live music all weekend and a legendary karaoke session every Thursday night, Sally’s might just be the best place to kick-start a weekend in Portlaoise.

1. Kavanagh’s

A cosy bar, free gigs, live concerts, a beer garden, streamed sports, comedy nights, good food, cold beer and so much more. You name it, Kavanagh’s has it! The longest family run pub in Portlaoise, this popular spot has only improved with age.

A revamp in 2008 held one thing high on the agenda … the customers! And this cracking little place on Main Street caters for everybody. Keeping the bar downstairs for the more low key evenings, they created a space upstairs for the more eventful meetups.

Regularly featuring up and coming musicians, comedians and DJs, Kavanagh’s is a top spot to celebrate any occasion. The stage hosts some fantastic bands at weekends with the pub itself not to be passed by anyone visiting Portlaoise this summer.
