The café aimed to create an alternative alcohol-free venue where adults can relax. Opened in the summer of 2018, The Old Barracks is proving to be a massive success, with coffee being enjoyed there seven days a week.
Here are five reasons to visit Ireland’s only adults-only café.
5. The stunning views – they are spectacular
This 300-year-old building has a beautiful glass conservatory where you can sit looking out at the surrounding area. Enjoy your coffee while taking in the breath-taking views of the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, and Mount Moylussa, County Clare’s highest mountain.
When the weather is good, you can even sit outside in their beautiful seating area and enjoy your coffee with your dog by your side. There are dog’s bowls dotted about the outside space ensuring your pooch is looked after too!
4. A variety of events – there’s plenty to do
Not only is The Old Barracks a café, but it is also home to a series of fun events! There are barista training facilities on-site if you want to learn the art of coffee and yoga classes take place each Saturday and Sunday before the café is open. What is better than starting your weekend with some yoga, followed by a cup of coffee?
On Sundays, during the summer months, they utilise their outdoor space to create a street-food garden. With live music, yummy street food, and delicious coffee, it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day.
Throughout the year they hold various coffee-related events. In the past, there has been coffee tastings and some talks on the art and science of coffee. Having recently held a charity day, what’s not to love about Ireland’s only adults-only café?
3. The yummy cakes and pastries – something sweet to hit the spot
Although a place renowned for its coffee, The Old Barracks also knows how to make tasty cakes! All home-baked, beautifully designed, and some of which are gluten-free, you are bound to find the perfect accompaniment to your coffee.
At the minute they have croissants which are filled with crème patisserie, topped with chocolate. These delights are beautiful to look at, and even more scrumptious than they look! They come in a variety of flavour combinations which are all elegantly served.
2. Watch and learn about the coffee process – catch a glimpse behind the scenes
Onsite there is a huge state-of-the-art 1000 kg coffee-roasting machine where they roast their beans. Live roasting happens most days, so if you’re lucky you will get to see some behind-the-scenes of the coffee world. It is for this reason of heavy machinery that children are not permitted on the premises.
Home to Ireland’s only under-counter brewing equipment, you gain access to behind-the-scenes like never before. Sit opposite the baristas as they make your coffee and froth the milk, and become amazed as they create stunning latte art. There are no barriers between you and the barista!
