Syrian refugee to open new ice cream shop in Northern Ireland

Mohamad Al Shaoa and his family were uprooted from their home in Syria following unrest in 2012. Living in Egypt and Lebanon for several years since then, he and his family finally settled in Enniskillen in 2019.

Mohamad Al Shaoa was 10 when he was forced to leave his home in Syria in 2012. Now, he is opening a new ice cream shop in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.

He is set to move into Belmore Street in the town with his business venture, Tasty. The new shop will open on 23 August and will showcase some of his favourite Arabic desserts from home as well as local classics.

Mohamed spoke to MyFermanagh about difficult life has been since leaving Syria in 2012. He said, “I left Syria with my family in 2012 and went to Egypt, and then in 2013 moved to Lebanon. When I was in Lebanon, I was unable to study, life was very hard.”

The Red Cross picked Mohamed and his family from many Syrian families living in Lebanon. They came straight to Fermanagh from Lebanon in 2019.

“Life in Fermanagh is very different from life in Syria but I like it here. Many people have been very friendly and helpful to me and my family, and we are grateful for the support we received,” Mohamed said.
