Although restrictions on international travel are set to be lifted next month, many people in Ireland are choosing to avoid foreign travel due to COVID-19.
With so many beauty spots, luxury resorts, bustling cities, and adventure activities to enjoy, Ireland is the perfect staycation alternative to foreign holidays.
The summer of staycations – discovering what’s on your doorstep
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Irish holidaymakers would have opted for foreign trips during the summer months. However, with lockdown restrictions and international travel limited, many have come to appreciate the beauty of their home country.
Thus, the brand new survey reveals Irish people’s favourite staycation destinations for 2021.
The survey is revealed just as news that Ireland receives 16 World Travel Awards nominations for excellence in travel and tourism. Thus, you could say we are spoilt for choice when it comes to staycation spots on the Emerald Isle.
The most popular locations – Ireland’s tourism hotspots
The survey reveals Irish people’s favourite staycation destinations, and you may be surprised by some of the results.
When asked about an alternative for city breaks in places like New York and Las Vegas, survey respondents voted unanimously for a trip to Galway.
Alternatively, those who usually enjoy a beach holiday to Portugal’s Algarve rated the county Kerry beaches at Inch Strand and Ballybunion as the closest alternative.
Do you enjoy an island escape to the Canary Islands? Then you might want to book a week on the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. However, if the Amalfi Coast is more your thing, then Dingle and West Kerry are your perfect Irish staycation spots.
Galway is a firm favourite – Ireland’s cultural capital
According to the survey that reveals Irish people’s favourite staycation destinations, 50% of Irish adults call Galway their favourite summer holiday spot.
The second most popular spot was Dublin, taking almost a third of the votes. Finally, coming in third is Kilkenny, with just over one-fifth of the votes.
Buzz.ie reported that the oldest age group surveyed, the over 55’s, favoured Galway for its “free-spirited culture”. 59% of those over 55 voted for Galway as their favourite staycation spot. This can be compared with the largest portion of 18-34 votes going to Dublin city.
If a beach holiday is what you’re after, Dingle and West Kerry take the top spot with 36% of votes. In a close second are Killarney and the majestic Ring of Kerry with 35%. In joint third is trad music hotspot Doolin and the Burren with 28% each.
Other top staycation spots across Ireland include Inchydoney and Barley Cove, and Kilkee and Lahinch. Other must-visit locations are Dunmore East and Tramore, and Achill Island.
