Dating back to 1781, Wicklow Head Lighthouse is situated an hour and a half’s drive from Dublin in County Wicklow. This striking octagonal stone tower overlooks the St-George’s Channel in the Irish Sea, offering stunning views of the coastline.

While some lighthouses are kept for visits, preferring the lighthouse keeper’s house for accommodation, here you will sleep in (and rent) the whole tower itself!

With the coziest kitchen nestled at the top, reached by 109 winding steps, you will be rewarded with a great panoramic view of the Irish Sea.

This unique accommodation is perfect for nature lovers and stargazers. Venturing from the tower, you will be able to explore the hidden beach, home to a seal colony, and wander through the Wicklow Mountains, renowned for their striking scenery.

Also a great spot for history enthusiasts, the location is only a few kilometers (miles) away from the monastic city of Glendalough, founded in the 6th century, and Avoca, home to one of the world’s oldest surviving manufacturing companies.

Budget: From €400 ($471) per night for 4 guests.

On the other side of the island, on the Wild Atlantic Way, stands the Clare Island Lighthouse. Overlooking Clew Bay, the tower can be reached by ferry from the Roonagh Pier, further enhancing the secluded nature of this haven of peace.

Decommissioned in 1965, the monument was converted into a luxury, one-of-a-kind boutique B&B, featuring six individually designed ensuite rooms, one of which has a private sauna.

It’s the only luxury establishment of its kind in Ireland, which also includes a multi-course dinner, made with the very best of local produce, making the experience all the more immersive.

Once the domain of the legendary pirate queen Grace O’Malley (Gráinne Mhaol), the surroundings are steeped in history. Not only will you be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the Irish west coast, but also by its rich cultural heritage.

Although it’s the perfect place to spend some time away from it all, the surrounding area is just waiting to be explored, such as the lively and colourful town of Westport, a great alternative to Galway.

Budget: From €310 ($365) per night for 2 guests, including dinner.

Address: Ballytoughey, Clare Island, Clew Bay, Ballytoohy More, Co. Mayo, Ireland

The guided tour, included in the package, is considered a highlight by the guests. This destination is ideal for those seeking a cozy and secluded experience, set amidst the wild landscapes of the Atlantic coast.

You’ll be lulled by the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs, the warmth of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage, and the ethereal atmosphere that characterises the place.
