Redcastle Hotel: Spa, Sea Views & Stunning Suites (Review)

The Redcastle Hotel is a coastal escape that mixes modern comfort with local Donegal charm. This is our honest review after a short break here.

If you’re looking for a Donegal getaway with stunning sea views and first class service, the Redcastle Hotel is a name that often comes up.

It is a four star spa hotel with a fine dining restaurant and even a golf course right on the water, so expectations were high from the start.

We spent a weekend here to see what all the fuss was about. It is a four star spa hotel on the sea with a fine dining restaurant and even a golf course, so expectations were high from the start.

Here is our honest review and what you can expect from a stay.

First Impressions – arriving at The Redcastle Hotel

As you approach the Redcastle Hotel, there’s a sense of leaving the world behind. The hotel sits peacefully on a wooded estate along the Inishowen Peninsula, with Lough Foyle spreading out before it. It’s a 4 star property that blends its 18th century origins with modern style, creating a welcoming sight on the coastal road.

From the moment we arrived, the view was the main thing we loved. The panoramic seascape of Lough Foyle is captivating, changing with the light and tides throughout the day.

The check in process was smooth and friendly, which set a positive tone for the start of our stay.

Beautiful Rooms – modern comfort with unforgettable views

We stayed in a sea-facing room, which I’d definitely recommend if you’re coming here – the views across Lough Foyle are one of the hotel’s strongest points.

The room itself was modern and comfortable, with a king size bed, a pair of armchairs by the window, and a juliet-style balcony for some fresh air.

The bathroom had a solid walk-in shower and local-brand toiletries. Not overly fancy, but practical and tidy.

Blackout curtains, good water pressure, and a kettle in the room all helped tick the boxes.

Fine Dining – beautiful food at The Edge Restaurant

There are two places to eat at the Redcastle Hotel:

We ate at The Edge during our stay and were pleasantly surprised by both the food and the service.

To start, I had the Crispy Ham Hock Fritter, which was flavourful with a perfectly crunchy coating. For mains, the Pan Fried Sea Trout was cooked just right – crispy skin, moist centre, and served with a clever mix of vegetables and sauce.

My partner is vegan, and we were expecting the usual “we’ll see what we can do” approach. Instead, the staff offered a separate vegan menu straight away, and our waitress confirmed the chef was happy to adapt other items too. She ended up with a pasta dish from the main menu made completely vegan, and she enjoyed it.

The red wine we ordered was excellent – smooth, well-balanced, and reasonably priced. Service was relaxed but attentive throughout.

Breakfast both mornings was also good: standard Irish buffet style, with sausages, eggs, bacon, potato bread, and all the usual. Continental options like fruit, pastries and cereals were also available. Solid breakfast overall – not extravagant, but more than enough to start the day right.

Spa and Wellness – unwinding by the water

The spa and pool area is one of the Redcastle Hotel’s biggest draws, and it’s easy to see why. It includes a pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, and treatment rooms.

I spent some time between the pool, steam room, and sauna, and all felt well-maintained. The steam room and sauna are on the smaller side, but it never felt overcrowded on our visit.

The water in the pool was just right – warm enough to relax, cool enough to refresh.

My partner booked a Head Massage in the treatment zone of the spa (Cara Organic Beauty) – her first time having one – and came out of the treatment room absolutely glowing. She described it as deeply relaxing and surprisingly effective for tension.

Service and Staff – hospitality that shines

The staff at Redcastle really stood out during our stay. From the moment we arrived to when we left, we felt looked after.

Reception was smooth, housekeeping was efficient, and the restaurant staff went above and beyond, especially when it came to accommodating dietary needs. No awkwardness, no confusion – just helpful, genuine service.

It’s the kind of Donegal hospitality you hope for, and it’s clear the staff take pride in the place.

Value for Money – A Top Pick for 2025

If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway with views, comfort, and a proper spa setup, Redcastle Hotel ticks all the right boxes.

It’s not over-the-top luxury, but that is not expected. What it offers is great value for the price (looking online, you can get rooms for around over £105/€120 per night) – a relaxing stay in a scenic part of Donegal, with good food, warm service, and a spa you’ll want to revisit.

We’d happily stay again. We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking a getaway to anywhere in Ireland. Be sure to add it to your Irish Bucket List!

How to Book Your Stay

You can book directly with the hotel or through standard platforms (see booking link below). We’d recommend booking spa treatments in advance, especially if you’re coming at the weekend or during holidays, as they tend to fill up quickly.

For a quieter spa experience and an overall more affordable price, you could try a midweek break.

Prices vary by season, but overall it offers solid value considering the location, facilities and quality of service.
