Cork city’s docklands are due to undergo a huge transformation as the plans for Cork’s South Docks are revealed.

The plans for the South Docks are the latest in several developments set to transform Ireland’s second-largest city.

Recently, plans were also unveiled for Custom House Quay, including the construction of Ireland’s tallest building as part of a €150m development.

It is hoped the plans will transform the city’s dockland area into a vibrant neighbourhood that is attractive for both locals and tourists.

O’Callaghan Properties are the developers behind the project. Submitting a statement about the plans, a spokesperson for the company revealed they hope the development “will create a vibrant, dynamic mixed-use neighbourhood for Cork.”

They said it has “the potential to transform the South Docks into a major driver of economic activity and employment and a cultural and tourist landmark for years to come.”

The proposal includes a 130-bed rehab hospital, three multi-story office buildings, and 80 ‘build to sell’ apartments.

The developers also plan to restore the old Odlum Mills and repurpose it into two buildings. This development will include 84 apartments, a cinema, a food hall, and offices.

Most exciting of all, they proposed a new “360-degree landmark rooftop destination for the city”.

The development will also include an amenity space with connecting paths and cycleway, which will be great for a Cork City cycle tour. Overall, the new development is expected to create 5,000 jobs.

The plans have the potential to transform Cork city into one of the most vibrant and inviting destinations in Ireland.

In a statement, O’Callaghan Properties said, “The promenade at Kennedy Quay has the potential to become one of the city’s primary pedestrian routes and an attraction in its own right.

“The project can also give expression to the principles of the ‘15-minute city’ outlined in the Draft City Development Plan.

“The highly sustainable project is also informed by the challenges arising from climate change. It will promote sustainable values in the lives of those who reside there and interact with it in other ways.”

The city’s population looks set to increase by 50% by 2040. So, the new developments will give Cork the well-needed boost to accommodate its growing population.
