The 2007 tragic romance starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank makes the most of the whimsical Irish scenery. Here are the romantic P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland.
The Hollywood adaptation of P.S. I Love You, written by Irish author Cecelia Ahern, was released in 2007 and quickly became a favourite among romance fans everywhere. Making the most of the romantic setting of the Emerald Isle, there are various P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland.
The tear-jerking romance follows New York-born Holly (Hilary Swank) after losing her Irish husband Gerry (Gerard Butler) to a brain tumour.
Gerry has written letters to Holly to help her deal with the grief of losing him with instructions to help her move on. While much of the story takes place in New York, the letters lead Holly to Ireland, Gerry’s home and where the couple first met.
With various settings in both Wicklow and Dublin that showcase the beauty of Irish scenery and the lively nature of Irish culture, we share with you five of the most romantic P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland.
5. Blessington Lakes – the unsuccessful fishing trip
On her visit to Ireland, Holly recruits the companionship of her two close friends Sharon and Denise.
The three girls decide to go out fishing on the beautiful Blessington Lakes, or Poulaphouca Reservoir, set in the incredible surroundings of the County Wicklow hills and mountains.
During their time on the lake, slapstick comedy ensues as the fishing trip fails to go to plan. Thinking they’ve caught a fish, the three women try their best to reel it in and, in the process, fill the boat with water, lose their oars, and end up falling over in the tiny boat.

4. Sally Gap, Powerscourt Mountain, Co. Wicklow – the perfect first meeting
One of the P.S. I Love You film locations in Ireland you need to visit is the breathtaking Sally Gap at the heart of the Wicklow Mountains.
Fans of the movie will recognise the romantic spot as the location where, when reading one of Gerry’s letters, Holly flashed back to when the pair first met.
The romantic appeal of this beautiful spot is clear with its heather-covered hills that provide magnificent views for miles around.

3. Ballysmuttan Bridge. Co. Wicklow – a beautiful spot
This is one of the first P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland that we see in the movie. The bridge features when Gerry sends the three women to Ireland.
Shown in a breathtaking bird’s eye view shot, we see their car travel the roads of the Wicklow Mountains and over the beautiful Ballysmuttan Bridge that crosses the River Liffey.
Later, during her flashback to their first meeting, Holly remembers how she and Gerry walked from Sally Gap to Ballysmuttan Bridge.

2. Whelan’s Bar, Co. Dublin – a popular spot
As well as the letters left for Holly, Gerry has written letters for Denise and Sharon that detail activities to do with Holly. One of the instructions he leaves the women is to go to Whelan’s Bar, a bar which he took Holly to on one of their earliest dates.
While keeping the same name, the movie implies that this pub is situated in a small village in Wicklow where Gerry grew up. However, the pub is, in fact, a popular nightlife spot in the heart of Ireland’s capital city, Dublin.
Here the women listen to an Irish musician sing the popular song ‘Galway Girl’, and Holly remembers when Gerry sang it for her all those years before.

1. Kilruddery House, Bray, Co. Wicklow – a cottage on the estate
While the 17th-century stately home is not a main feature as one of the P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland, the cottages situated on Kilruddery Estate are where the three women stay during their time on the Emerald Isle.
The cosy cottage adds to the romantic atmosphere of the movie with its stone façade. It has traditional Irish charm, making it the perfect place to stay.
This beautiful spot is filled with history and charm, making it a must-visit in County Wicklow, even if you haven’t seen the movie! It is without doubt the most romantic of the P.S. I Love You filming locations in Ireland.
