Discovering the meaning and origin of your surname is a fascinating way to gain greater insight into where your ancestors may have come from, who they were, and what they did for work.

This incredible online dictionary, which took over four years to create, was put together by prominent historical linguists, medieval historians, and lexicographers at the University of West England in Bristol.

It includes every surname that currently has more than 100 bearers, boasting over 5,000 names from Ireland.

Each entry offers details about the name, variant spellings, and an explanation of its origins. You can discover its etymology, lists of early bearers, and geographical locations.

He spoke to The Irish Times about the project, saying, “This amazing database covers tens of thousands of family names. It was made possible by careful and painstaking research over many years.”

Offering people the chance to discover more about their family history, the online dictionary reveals the origins and meanings of Irish surnames, such as Murphy, Campbell, Cunningham, and many others.

Professor Emeritus of Onomastics at the University of West England Richard Coates led the research.

He told The Irish Times, “There seems to be perpetual interest in where surnames come from. It can be an excellent way of helping people begin to trace their family histories.”
