Located on the renowned and picturesque Causeway Coastal Route on the north coast of County Antrim, The Giant’s Causeway took the crown as Northern Ireland’s most popular filming location.

Unique and mystical, this unusual natural phenomenon attracts visitors from all around the world who are keen to experience the rugged coastal beauty of Ireland and immerse themselves in the island’s folklore.

A Hollywood favourite – featuring in several hit films

The iconic Northern Irish beauty spot has featured in several well-known movies. Thus, earning it the title of the nation’s most popular filming location, according to City Tours Belfast

Expect dramatic coastal landscapes hugging the wild and rugged Atlantic Ocean and stunning landscapes all around. So, it comes as no surprise that the spot has proven so popular with directors.

Movie buffs might recognise the Giant’s Causeway from hits such as Dracula Untold (2014), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and, of course, Game of Thrones (2011-2019).

The Mourne Mountains ranked in second place to be named one of Northern Ireland's most popular filming locations.

The study analysed the top 50 films and shows on IMDB that feature filming locations in Northern Ireland. They ranked each spot based on the number of Instagram posts and Google ratings to reveal the most popular filming location.

The Giant’s Causeway achieved an impressive 19.59 out of 20. A score based on a whopping 366,500 Instagram posts and a Google rating of 4.7. Thus, setting it in a league above the rest. 

Ranking just behind the Giant’s Causeway, The Mourne Mountains was named the nation’s second-most popular filming location. Achieving a score of 17.63, the majestic mountain range boasts a total of 279,490 Instagram posts and a Google rating of 4.9.

The Dark Hedges, known for its feature in Game of Thrones, ranked third. A total of 126,993 Instagram posts and a Google rating of 4.3 gained it an overall score of 12.24.

Titanic Belfast ranked fourth, followed closely by Strangford Lough in fifth.

Dunluce Castle, Tollymore Forest, Mussenden Temple, Belfast City Hall, and Mount Stewart closed out the top ten list. Thus, revealing the ultimate list of Northern Ireland’s most popular filming locations.
