The Good Food Awards 2023 – results announced annually
The Good Food Awards winners are revealed to the world each year on 1 November. The awards say, “Whether you are looking for a quick snack or a tasty fish supper, then look no further.
“Our Award-Winning Fish & Chip Shops / Restaurants have been hand-picked to be among the best in their field”.
The defining factors of the best chippies include the food quality, service, and value for money.
The Fish and Chip Awards are given to the establishments with the highest customer ratings and votes and receive a ‘Blue Ribbon for Delicious Dishes’. This year, five NI chippies have been ranked amongst the best in the UK.
5 NI chippies ranked among best in the UK – the best of the best
The first of five chippies ranked among the best in the UK is Morton’s of Ballycastle.
Trading in the harbour area of Ballycastle, fish from Morton’s are caught locally when possible or are obtained from famous fishing ports Greencastle, Donegal, and Portavogie, County Down.
Next is the award-winning fish and chip shop The Chippy in Antrim, located on Railway Street. A longstanding favourite in Belfast, John Long’s, of course, made the list as well.
People have been heading to John Long’s for over 100 years for the freshest fish and most beautiful Maris Piper chips.
Somewhat of a new kid on the block, Fish City in Belfast city centre also made the list. Since opening almost ten years ago, the family-owned business has won many awards.
This includes the award for the UK’s healthiest and most sustainable fish and chip restaurant. Finally, Doc’s Bistro in Newcastle, established in 2006, also ranked among the best.
This year’s awards – the best restaurants in the UK
Aside from the Fish and Chips awards, seven restaurants in Northern Ireland have been recognised as some of the best this year.
Among these restaurants is Gatto’s restaurant in Ballymena. A fully licensed authentic Italian restaurant, all the ingredients are made fresh in-house.
The Welcome in Belfast has been a firm favourite in the city for years and also made the list. It was recently named the ‘Best Restaurant in Northern Ireland 2022’ at the Golden Chopsticks Awards.
The other five restaurants are Embers in Armagh, The Boathouse in Antrim, Sperrin Restaurant in Omagh, The Gown at Bishop’s Gate Hotel in Derry, and finally, The Lighthouse Bar and Grill in Donaghadee.
