New digital map showcases Dublin street art

Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has created a new digital map of the growing volume of street art in and around Dublin.

The new street art popping up is part of Dublin Canvas. This is an inclusive public art initiative that adds a splash of colour to the traffic control boxes that are highly visible at traffic junctions throughout Dublin city.

While there are currently 600 pieces of artwork dotted around the city, it is expected that there will be over 750 by the end of autumn this year.

Using Esri’s ArcGIS system, the interactive digital map pinpoints exactly where each box is located and provides an image of the street art as well.

So, a click on the image then provides information about the art, as well as a bit of background information about the artist.

The artwork around the city ranges from professional Dublin artists to talented amateurs from every walk of life.

You might have spotted some of the works of art already. There are the squirrels in Stepaside, the beasts in Blackrock, or the fishermen on Fitzwilliam Street, to name a few! There’s a mix of different styles to suit all tastes.

Dublin Canvas is a community art project. So, the goal is to bring flashes of colour and creativity to everyday objects in the great County Dublin area.

The intent is to make Dublin a more beautiful place to live, work, and visit. Dublin Canvas runs from late spring and finishes by late autumn.

The artists, who come from all walks of life, display a variety of art disciplines. There are graphic designers, illustrators, stencil artists, there are also street artists and many more.

After submissions are selected, the artwork is painted all throughout the summer and right up to the end of autumn. In 2022, all artwork will be completed by late August.
