An Irish Goodbye stole the hearts of movie lovers when it was released in 2022.
A brand new Belfast mural has been unveiled to celebrate the Oscar-winning short film An Irish Goodbye.
Created by Peaball, the same team behind the iconic Derry Girls mural, the new street art piece is located on Winetavern Street in Belfast’s Smithfield area.
Launched at a special event attended by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Mickey Murray, as well as the film’s cast and crew, the mural is adding to the city’s vibrant street art scene.
Paying homage to Belfast’s thriving film industry – an award-winning short film
Released in 2022, An Irish Goodbye tells the tale of estranged brothers reuniting after their mother’s untimely death.
Directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, the film won Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards. It also received Best British Short Film at the BAFTAs in 2023.
The new Belfast mural celebrates the Oscar-winning short. It depicts Berkeley and White alongside actors James Martin, Seamus O’Hara, and Paddy Jenkins.
In a subtle nod to the movie’s most iconic scenes, the mural also includes the balloons used by the brothers during their mother’s final farewell.
Belfast 2024 – a celebration of the city’s culture
The new Belfast mural, which celebrates the Oscar-winning short, was unveiled as part of Belfast City Council’s celebration of culture.
Councillor Murray said, “Belfast 2024 is all about highlighting and showcasing our city’s creativity. We couldn’t let it happen without paying tribute to one of our greatest creative success stories – An Irish Goodbye.
“The film really put our local film sector on the map when it picked up both BAFTA and Academy Awards last year. So, this is a fitting tribute to a creative collaboration which has done so much to promote Belfast on a world stage.”
