Bród, famously known as one of the Irish President’s beloved Bernese Mountain Dogs owned by President Michael D. Higgins, has died, according to an official statement from Áras an Uachtaráin.

The 11-year-old was well known for being part of an adorable double act with two-year-old Misneach.

He was regularly photographed standing beside President Michael D. Higgins when welcoming dignitaries and members of the public to Áras an Uachtaráin.

A spokesperson for President Higgins said, “President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina are sad to confirm that Bród, one of their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, has passed away at just past the age of 11 years old”.

The statement went on to say that “Bród was 11 years and two months at Áras an Uachtaráin, having come to the Áras as a 8 week old puppy.

“Bród was a very much loved dog by all that met him, and he enjoyed meeting with the thousands of members of the public who came to Áras an Uachtaráin over the years, and he was probably one of the most photographed dogs in Ireland.

“He will be missed by the President, Sabina and all at the Áras, particularly Misneach, the President’s remaining dog who is two and a half years old and who has shared his space with Bród over recent months and was his constant companion, aware of Bród’s situation and very attentive to him”.

The President’s dogs have become celebrities in their own right during his presidency; they even have unofficial social media accounts set up in their names with thousands of followers.

President Michael D. Higgins has been the President of Ireland since 2011 and is currently serving his second term.

President Higgins has made it clear in the past that he is an avid dog lover. Síoda was another Bernese Mountain Dog and Bród’s former companion he had who died after a short illness in 2020.

He also previously had another Bernese Mountain Dog called Shadow during his earlier years in Phoenix Park in Dublin.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a giant breed originally bred in Switzerland as draft dogs or farm dogs and was generally used to pull carts. Their average lifespan tends to be between eight and ten years old.

While the Bernese Mountain Dog may appear intimidatingly large, thanks to their generally friendly nature, they’re more akin to a gentle giant and are a delightful dog to be around.

Speaking about his dogs previously, the President said they “are not merely ice-breakers, they’re also a great source of wisdom, and they must be protected from the stresses of the Anthropocene.”
