Looking ahead to the 2023 Irish Open in County Kildare

Can McIlroy win on Irish soil?

Looking ahead to the 2023 Irish Open in County Kildare.

By this stage of the season, the Irish Open would normally have concluded with the Emerald Isle’s most iconic golf tournament usually taking place at the start of July.

In 2023, however, the tournament has been assigned a new place on the European Tour’s calendar with the contest set to take place from 7-10 September.

The later date means that all of Ireland’s most famous golfing sons will be there, including none other than Rory Mcllroy who might bring the Claret Jug with him to Country Kildare if things go according to plan during the 151st edition of The Open.

Indeed, the 34-year-old is at just 7/1 in the latest Open Championship 2023 odds and was the outright favourite to lift the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool Golf Course going into the tournament.

While having the current Open champion in the field at the 2023 Irish Open would undoubtedly add a bit more stardust to Ireland’s premier golfing event, the truth is that golf-mad Irish fans will flock to Country Kildare in their tens of thousands regardless.

Where is the 2023 Irish Open? – beautiful County Kildare

The 2023 Irish Open will take place at The K Club which is a 5-star hotel in County Kildare with a golf course and spa.

There are two championship golf courses within The K Club complex, both designed by the late Arnold Palmer. The Ryder Cup Course is typically hosts professional tournaments, and as the name suggests, has also staged golf’s greatest team competition.

It was in 2006 that Europe and America went head to head at The K Club for the 36th edition of the Ryder Cup. The Europeans claimed a dominant nine-point win over their American rivals.

As you can see, this course in picturesque County Kildare is steeped in history, and that extends to the actual playing of the Irish Open after the event was held there at The K Club for the first time in 2016.

Mcllroy won the K Club’s inaugural Open, recording what was perhaps the most impressive finish in any European Tour event to date after eagling the 72nd hole. It was a dramatic climax to a tournament that has only gone from strength to strength since.

A special mention must go to the extremely generous Mcllroy who donated his entire Irish Open winning purse of £515,000 to a local charity.

The K Club’s location in County Kildare means that it is easily accessible for fans coming from Dublin. The course is only a 30-minute drive from Dublin International Airport which means that tournament goers have the option of staying in Ireland’s capital if they wish.

For those looking to turn the Irish Open into a mini getaway, there is no better place to unwind than County Kildare. The county’s exquisite countryside offers every type of accommodation you can imagine.

The upcoming Irish Open guarantees the strongest field in its history and takes place in one of Ireland’s most breathtaking counties, so you can bet that the 2023 edition will be the best yet.
