Since London is more dangerous than Belfast, it is worth knowing the main areas to avoid, or at least be cautious if visiting.

The most dangerous areas of London in 2024, according to recent data from the Metropolitan Police, are Westminster, Camden, Kensington and Chelsea, Islington, and Hammersmith and Fulham.

While some of these may come as a surprise, the data shows that these areas have seen a rapid increase in criminal activity.

Some notorious areas of London which should be avoided are Southwark and Lamberth, which have gained a bad reputation for having the highest rate of gun and knife crime.

Brent, Haringey, and Hackney are also renowned for their high levels of gun and knife crime. Regarding safety, the best areas to minimise the risk of falling victim to crime in London include Richmond, Harrow, Bexley, and Sutton.

Some of the factors that have been said to add to the increase in crime rates are the association of the ongoing cost of living crisis with increased violence and acquisitive crimes like burglary and theft over the past year.

While crime rate figures clearly show that London is more dangerous than Belfast, there are areas in Belfast where you should be cautious when visiting.

Belfast, like any city, has its good and its bad areas. Since the city has a history of segregation, it can be seen that self-segregation is an ongoing process, adding to the unsafety in certain areas.

Some main places to avoid are parts of west Belfast, including Shankill and Falls Road, by night; parts of north Belfast, including Tigers Bay, Ardoyne, and New Lodge at night; and Short Strand in East Belfast at night.

The city is considered safe by day, but always be vigilant as you would in any major city. If you visit Belfast, it is worth noting the safest areas in the city to reduce the risk of being a victim of crime.

The safest areas include the Titanic Quarter, Belfast City Centre, Stranmills, and the Cathedral Quarter.

Many people who visit Belfast opt to stay in the centre to be close to attractions, which is an excellent idea for safety. However, always be vigilant at night in unfamiliar areas.

London is more dangerous than Belfast, but it is wise to be cautious in both cities; always go with your gut feeling and never wander around unlit streets at night.

One of the best things to do if visiting either city is to ask locals for their advice in the area where you are staying. This can be the best way to stay safe in both London and Belfast.
