Heavy downpours
Today will bring heavy rain to most of Ireland with pockets of dry spells appearing in southern parts of Co. Cork.
Showers will clear up in the west towards the afternoon with parts of Mayo getting sunny spells for a while despite the cold conditions.
Temperatures will vary between 9C in the south and a much chillier 6C in the northeast.
As a brisk northerly wind picks up this evening the rain will clear in most places bringing a dry but cold night.
Rain will continue in the east with further outbreaks becoming heavy in Dublin, bringing a risk of flooding in places.
Temperatures are forecast to plummet overnight with rural parts of the Midlands dropping as low as -3C.
The west coast will be a similar -2C while the east coast will stay above freezing at 3C with temperatures in Belfast reaching lows of 0C.
Friday frost
The Irish weather forecast has predicted a frosty start to Friday with northerly winds becoming moderate.
Conditions will stay dry in Ireland with sunny spells and lighter winds in the afternoon.
Temperatures will vary between 9C in Munster and 5C in Ulster with Dublin commuters ending the working week at a chilly 8C.
The rain will continue to hold off well into Friday evening before showers arrive in Atlantic coastal counties overnight.
Downpours will spread eastward towards the early hours of Saturday morning with southerly winds pushing the rain more widespread.
Temperatures will remain above freezing with an average of 3C in most places and around 0C in rural parts.
Saturday will start wet and cloudy with the Irish weather forecast offering the promise of sunny spells in the south towards the afternoon.
Scattered showers
The heaviest rain will soak northern counties on Saturday afternoon while elsewhere will get scattered showers before clearing up in the evening.
An average temperature of 8C across Ireland will bring a more settled day with it feeling the warmest at 10C in southern parts of Cork.
Rain will ease for most overnight with the northeast and eastern counties getting any remaining drizzle before morning.
Temperatures will recover slightly at 4C in the south and 2C along the Atlantic coastline.
Sunday is set to be the brightest day of the weekend with light showers continuing to affect eastern counties.
Moderate northeast winds will keep temperatures cool but the west and south will get a rather pleasant day with dry conditions, sunny spells and highs of between 10C and 8C.
But be sure to make the most of Sunday afternoon before further showers arrive overnight and Ireland starts another working week under a formidable rain cloud.
