An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) is one of two Irish films that rank amongst the best movies of 2022 by Rotten Tomatoes.
With a 100% rating on the movie review website for TV and film, Colm Bairéad’s An Cailín Ciúin has been ranked the best movie of 2022 by Rotten Tomatoes.
David Rooney of The Hollywood Report wrote of the film, “Few films explore both the shelter and the solitude of silence with the eloquence of Colm Bairéad’s gently captivating Irish-language drama ‘The Quiet Girl’”.
Jessica Kiang of Variety wrote, “Bairéad’s script, based on a short story by Claire Keegan, remains resolutely focused on the smaller end of the scale, the intimate, ordinary sorrows of loneliness and loss and coming of age”.

An Cailín Ciúin tells the story of a withdrawn nine-year-old girl (Catherine Clinch) who is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with distant relatives on a farm for the summer.
Here, she experiences a loving home for the first time. Set in the early 1980s, the young girl discovers a brand-new way of living.
Starring Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley, and Andrew Bennett, to name a few, the film became the first Irish-language movie to gross more than €1 million at the box office.
Furthermore, upon its release, it won a slew of awards at highly-regarded international film festivals. It also made history as the first Irish language film to feature at Berlin International Film Festival.
The top ten – a diverse range of movies from around the world
The other Irish film to break the top ten best films of 2022 is The Banshees of Inisherin. The movie was directed by Martin McDonagh and stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It received huge praise across the board.
Other films that feature in the top ten are Happening, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Till, Girl Picture, To Leslie, EO, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, and Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.
With movies from Ireland to Bhutan and beyond, An Cailín Ciúin is well-deserving of the top spot.

The film is Ireland’s official entry in the International Feature category for the 2023 Oscars. In turn, it’s touted to be in with a great chance.
US audiences will finally get to see the movie this month on 16 December 2022. This is the result of exclusive screenings in New York and Los Angeles ahead of its full release.
