County Longford is frequently the topic of online opinion, divided between its optimistic locals and outsiders who believe in the stereotype.

Longford is in the midlands of Ireland, perhaps in one of the most favourable locations for commuting and an affordable rural life, yet it is constantly a place that causes divided online opinion. It gets the most stick just by hearing its name, but is it warranted?

The outsiders think it is unwise to walk its streets, while the locals insist that it is a thriving place to see, as it has an iconic cathedral, theatre and rich history, as well as talent.

Longford town does not represent the whole of Longford — defining the difference

When you hear of Longford, most of the negativity is about the town. You see videos posted of certain incidents that feed into the ongoing narrative that it is a risk to visit, even if these things happen in other counties.

There are villages full of history, passionate volunteers and sightseeing. These aspects stay overshadowed by other circumstances. Longford is mostly filled with visionaries, community and hope.

Locals argue that whenever something bad happens, it affects the entirety of their whole county. This divides opinion over whether the county is dangerous, or full of potential.

Giving Longford a much-needed boost — marketing the positives

If you visit Longford, you would have seen a campaign happening this year called Love Life Longford. The intent is to, essentially, reinforce and remind locals and outsiders that it is a proud county full of vibrant events, people and community.

As an Irish county that divides opinion more than anywhere else, it has frequently proven to be a great place. Much of what it offers is ignored, from literary festivals, to sold-out nights like The Marquee in Drumlish.

Such campaigns inform tourists that there are fascinating places to explore, experience and dine that makes Longford a must to come and visit.

One of the most wasted opportunities was Longford’s own shopping centre that never came to be. If you enter Longford, beside the Connolly Barracks, there is a large, boarded up building. Locals grieve at what could have been a shopping centre, which was constructed in 2008.

This very building is now back up for sale. Some people have the opinion online that it should become a medical centre, as the nearest hospital is in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

The locals believe that this could be a massive benefit to the community. An incomplete project fuels the opinion that Longford is economically unstable.

En route to Longford Town is the now privately owned, protected building called Carrigglas Manor, one of Ireland’s many creepy abandoned buildings.

Although it should be noted that the gatehouse has been restored, there is still a rundown housing estate, decaying stonewalls, and more.

Many online videos and posts of the manor’s deteriorating condition have caused plenty of divided public opinion from locals and beyond.

Carrigglas Manor (Carrickglass Demesne) holds a connection to the renowned Jane Austen via the former occupants, the Lefroy family, as well as links to the architect, James Gandon.

Having previously hosted tours when the Lefroy family owned it and was a local asset, the history has become forgotten in Longford, which cannot thrive off it.

There were many what ifs here of what it could have been, but the gates remain locked from the public.

Did you know that Longford has its own successful media company that is producing quality short films and documentaries? How about an entire literary museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of a well-respected female writer?

It seems unlikely that many know that Oscar Wilde’s sister is buried in Edgeworthstown. How about an entire hill that celebrated Bealtaine, one of Ireland’s ancient traditions we still cherish today, in 2026 and is trying to be preserved for future generations?

Beyond the ‘face’ of a reputation, Longford has so much more to give. The people want to show you. If you open your eyes beyond any depictions, whether online or through words, you will find beauty.

Success stories are overlooked — there are many

Where Longford is being lumbered with a negative opinion, people overlook that there are many successful people from the county. From singers, musicians, authors and filmmakers, many of these individuals have ended up gaining national and international attention.

The Longford people take pride in one of their own achieving public recognition, while outsiders tend to forget or not realise that a famous individual is from the county.

It causes the area to not look as successful as it actually is. Locally, the county has its own variety groups, musical societies, youth theatre groups, and so much more.

That is the Irish county that divides opinion more than anywhere else. If you ever think about visiting County Longford, there are wonderful places to see. The reputation is caused by a few incidents specifically in the town, but beyond that, it is worth exploring.
