BAR 1661 has been awarded Best Cocktail Experience at the Food & Wine Restaurant of the Year Awards 2023. The venue in Dublin’s north city centre won the title out of a shortlist of 12 bars around Ireland, with second place awarded to Hawksmoor Dublin.

The Food & Wine Restaurant of the Year Awards in association with Rémy Martin took place at The Round Room at The Mansion House, with hundreds of guests recognising the best of Irish food and drink in a sold-out event hosted by Food & Wine editor Gillian Nelis. The gala ceremony is a chance for the industry to network, share knowledge, celebrate success, and connect Irish hospitality insiders.

This Best Cocktail Experience award comes after a spate of recent accolades for the bar, including Innovative Bar of the Year and Cocktail Bar of the Year at the 2023 Bar of the Year Awards in October, on the back of winning the top award of Ireland’s Bar of the Year 2022 last year. BAR 1661 were also recognised by the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards as one of their Top 10 Regional Honourees for Best Bar Team in Europe in April this year.

Owner Dave Mulligan said, “BAR 1661 has had an incredible year, from showcasing what we do in cities such as New York and Singapore to hosting multiple guests in our own market. Hopefully, this award proves we are achieving our core goal of lifting Irish cocktail culture to new heights”.

Independent to the core, BAR 1661 creates a unique cocktail experience for guests. Their current ‘staunchly Irish and fiercely independent’ 32-drink menu champions key dates in Irish drinks history while showcasing the best of modern Ireland. Constantly innovating, they barrel age a range of their own cocktails in their adjacent cocktail factory, Cuckoo Lane, also home to the successful Craft Cocktails brand. The bar’s mission has always been to introduce poitín to the world and to elevate Irish cocktail culture to stand tall on the world stage, and with their focus on collaboration, community, and cocktails, the bar has spent 2023 taking poitín global from America to Asia.

In the past year, BAR 1661 have brought their cocktail menu to take over some of the world’s best bars, including the world’s most awarded pub, the Dead Rabbit in New York, as well as the innovative Analogue in Singapore, Present Company in Liverpool, and the Sun Tavern in London. BAR 1661 has also hosted the Dead Rabbit on home soil, as well as the iconic Remy Savage of London’s A Bar with Shapes for a Name, top 30 bar Swift London, Tales of the Cocktail Best Restaurant Bar winning Sexy Fish, and top 50 bar Little Red Door Paris, among others.
