Claiming the third position, just behind Iceland in first and New Zealand in second, the island of Ireland rose in the rankings from the sixth position in 2021.

The most peaceful countries in the world ‒ relaxing places to live and visit
Three other European countries made up the top five, ranking alongside Ireland as the most peaceful countries in the world. Thus, the continent can claim the title of most peaceful in the world.
Denmark followed Ireland to claim the fourth position. Meanwhile, Austria closed out the top five. Three other European countries ‒ Portugal, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic ‒ claimed sixth, seventh, and eighth positions, respectively.
Meanwhile, Singapore and Japan closed out the top ten list, ranking ninth and tenth.
The ranking system ‒ scoring from one to five
To determine the list of most peaceful countries in the world, each country was given a score between one and five, one being the most peaceful and five the least.
The score given was made up of 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators. These cover the level of Societal Safety and Security, the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and the degree of Militarisation.
Overall, Ireland received an impressive score of 1.288, ranking it among the most peaceful countries in the world. Factors taken into account when scoring each country include individual scores out of five given for violent crime, safety, political instability, weapons exports, and more.
The other end of the spectrum ‒ the least peaceful countries in the world
Ireland can boast of being one of the most peaceful countries in the world. However, various other locations ranked at the other end of the spectrum.
Ranking at 163, with a score of 3.554 out of five, is Afghanistan. Thus, making it the least peaceful country in the world. Just ahead of Afghanistan is Yemen at 162 and Syria at 161.
Other spots that ranked among the least peaceful countries in the world were Russia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Overall trends ‒ the shifting of peace around the world
By analysing data from the GPI over the past number of years, experts can detect various shifts in the level of peace around the world.
One uplifting finding is that, despite recent commitments, militarisation has improved in 113 countries since 2008. Similarly, terrorism levels continued to improve, with 70 countries recording no attacks in 2021, making the best result since 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the war in Ukraine had a significant impact on the world peacefulness levels this year. Two of the five countries with the largest deterioration in peacefulness were Russia and the Ukraine.
