Ice House Hotel and Spa Review: a Peaceful Riverside Escape in Ballina, County Mayo

The Ice House Hotel and Spa is a stylish riverside hotel in Ballina, with lovely rooms, good food, friendly service, and one of the best spa settings in Mayo. We stayed recently to see what it is actually like for a relaxing West of Ireland break.

Mayo is hard to beat when you want a bit of space, a slower pace and a few days away from the usual noise.

The Ice House Hotel and Spa in Ballina fits that kind of trip very well. It is close enough to town that you can head out for food, drinks or a wander, but the hotel itself feels calm and tucked away beside the River Moy.

We stayed recently, and it worked well for the kind of break most people want in Mayo. Good rooms, great food, a lovely spa, sound staff and a setting that does a lot of the heavy lifting.

It does not feel like a standard hotel dropped into a town. The river is the main character here. You see it from the rooms, the restaurant and the spa, and it gives the whole place a quieter, more relaxed feel.

The location is one of the best things about The Ice House. The hotel sits right beside the River Moy, just outside the busier feel of Ballina town centre. You are not miles away from anything, but you still get that sense of being properly switched off.

That balance is the big appeal. You can go into Ballina for a pint, dinner, or a stroll around town, then come back to somewhere that feels peaceful again.

Ballina itself has a lot going for it. It has the feel of a proper Irish town, with good pubs, local character and a strong connection to the river. The Moy is famous for salmon fishing too, which gives the setting a bit more meaning than just “nice view from the window”.

For a Mayo break, The Ice House gives you options. You can use it as a base for exploring North Mayo, or you can do very little and still feel like the trip was worthwhile.

The rooms – stylish, calm and made for the river views

The rooms at The Ice House were very comfortable. They have a boutique feel, but not in an overdone way. Nothing felt too fussy. Just clean, stylish and easy to settle into.

The river views make a big difference. Looking out towards the Moy gives the room a calmer feel, especially in the morning or later in the evening when the light changes over the water.

It is the kind of room you would actually spend time in, not just somewhere to leave your bag before heading out again. That matters on a break like this, where half the point is to slow down.

The rooms suit the hotel well. Modern, relaxed and tied into the setting rather than feeling separate from it.

54° 9° Restaurant, Ballina – dinner beside the River Moy

The food was one of the strongest parts of the stay. The hotel’s 54° 9° Restaurant has a lovely riverside setting, and it feels like it belongs in the building.

The Ice House has a bit of history behind it, too. The building was once used to store ice for preserving salmon from the River Moy.

That gives the place more character than a standard hotel dining room. You are not just eating beside the river. You are in a building with an actual connection to it.

We had dinner there, and the food was excellent. It felt like somewhere you would book even if you were not staying in the hotel, which is always a good sign.

The bar was a nice spot as well. Handy for a drink before dinner or a quiet one afterwards, without feeling too formal or flat.

The staff were very good throughout the stay. Friendly, helpful and professional, but not stiff. That makes a difference, especially in a hotel that is clearly built around relaxing rather than rushing.

Chill Spa, Ballina – the biggest reason to book

The spa is probably the main reason many people will book The Ice House. Chill Spa feels like a proper part of the hotel, not a small treatment room added on as an afterthought.

The setting helps massively. Being right beside the River Moy makes the whole experience feel slower and calmer.

We tried the spa during the stay, and it was excellent. The treatments were very good, the atmosphere was peaceful, and it had that proper reset feeling you want from a spa break.

The outdoor areas are a big part of the appeal, too. The hot tubs by the river are exactly the kind of thing you hope for on a relaxing hotel break in the west of Ireland. Robe on, steam in the air, river beside you. Hard to complain.

If you are booking The Ice House, make time for the spa. It is not just a nice extra. It is one of the main reasons to stay here.

North Mayo – slow days, good scenery, and no need to rush

The Ice House is well placed for a relaxed Mayo trip. Ballina is close by, so you can head into town easily enough, but the hotel still feels separate from the busier parts of the day.

This is a good area if you like a slower kind of weekend. River views, coastal drives, local pubs, good food and some of that classic west of Ireland scenery that does not need much explaining once you are there.

It is also a handy base for exploring more of North Mayo. Beaches, countryside and Wild Atlantic Way scenery are all within reach, but you do not need to turn the weekend into a packed itinerary.

That is one of the best things about staying somewhere like The Ice House. You can do very little and still come home feeling like you had a proper break.
