Free Derry Corner goes green as world leaders gather in Glasgow for COP26 to discuss the effects of climate change.

Free Derry Corner gets a temporary makeover to mark COP26.
The mural normally reads, ‘You Are Now Entering Free Derry’. However, it has now been adapted to say, ‘You Are Now Entering Code Red For Humanity.’
Free Derry Corner is one of the most recognisable parts of the city. Thus, making it the perfect place to raise awareness of the ongoing climate crisis.
A new message – an important call to humanity

Climate activists Zero Waste North West are behind the temporary makeover at Free Derry Corner to mark the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.
The mural is part of a series of actions planned by the North West Climate Coalition in the build-up to the Global Day of Action. There is a rally and march happening in the city on Saturday, 6 November at 2 pm.

Various rallies are taking place around the world this weekend to call for action on the climate crisis.
Activists in Northern Ireland are calling on people in the northwest to gather at Derry’s Waterloo Place this Saturday.
Code red for humanity – the time to act is now

Recent shocking reports show that if things continue as they are, many parts of Ireland could be underwater by 2030.
So, actions and murals such as the COP26 makeover at Free Derry Corner call on officials to take urgent action to minimise our impact on the environment.
Jim Keys from Zero Waste North West spoke about the mural and the urgent climate emergency.

He said, “We wanted to use the wall to speak the reality behind the hype of COP26; that our global leaders are still more focused on propping up a capitalist system that is destroying the planet than responding to the climate emergency we are in.
“As the cradle of the civil rights movement, our struggle found strength in the global solidarity it won.”
He continued, “The climate justice movement is a global one; not just with people but with the ecosystems which are integral to supporting life on earth.”
COP26 – a global discussion on climate change

Global leaders gather in Glasgow to discuss actions we can take to combat climate change. Elsewhere, people are coming together around the world calling for action.
The COP26 makeover of the mural at Free Derry Corner is just one such call across Ireland and the world.
A spokesperson from the local climate coalition also spoke about the ongoing campaign.
They said, “Only through the pressure of people taking to the street, campaigning and mobilising for climate action, will there be the type of change needed to address the climate crisis.
“Governments have done too little too late; colluding with corporations allowing them to pollute and plunder the planet for profit no matter what the consequences are for communities and nature.”
