Féile an Phobail has grown over the last number of years to become Ireland’s largest community arts festival. From political talks to concerts and much more, West Belfast and beyond is alight with Irish culture.

The popular summer festival has now grown so much that it has added a Spring festival to bridge the gap between the yearly break, introducing the Féíle an Earraigh.

Background – when and where to visit Féile an Earraigh

Féile an Earraigh will take place from 1 March 2024 through to 17 March 2024, fittingly culminating the cultural celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day.

The spring festival was launched by Raidió Fáilte, an Irish language radio station based in west Belfast.

Féile an Phobail director Kevin Gamble confirmed there were 300 events taking place this March during the festival.

10. Féile Trad Trial

The Feile Trad Trial is one of the essential events of Féile an Earraigh.

This will take place every day across various different locations. Spots like the Duke of York, Rock Bar, the Sunflower and others will play host to a range of traditional Irish musicians.

9. Falls Road Mural Tour

Former activists and ex-prisoners from the Republican community will host a 3-hour walking tour of West Belfast’s iconic murals. This will delve deep into recent Irish history.

8. The Bodhrán and Tin Whistle Challenge

Learn an instrument with the tin whistle and bodhran challenge.

Want to get into playing a traditional Irish instrument? This is your chance! This 1.5-hour workshop will teach you how to play a traditional Irish song on either the tin whistle or bodhrán.

7. West Belfast Little Explorers

One for the kids. Head to Falls Park for an “outdoor classroom”, which includes storytime, play time and let’s explore time. It will be held at 10 am on 4, 5, 11 and 12 March.

6. Irish Language/Bilingual Tour of Milltown Cemetery

The tour of Milltown Cemetery is one of the essential events of Féile an Earraigh.

The history of the city is told through the tongue of the Irish language. The guided tour will last 2 hours. Key topics will include Winifred Carney, the Easter Rising, Anto Finnegan and Charlie Tully.

5. The joint Falls Shankill Tour

The Falls and Shankill Roads are synonymous with recent Irish history. This unique tour blends the Republican and Loyalist experience with first-hand accounts.

4. “The Typist with the Webley”: Winifred Carney

Celebrate International Women's Day with this free event.

Celebrating International Women’s Day, this free event will be hosted at the James Connolly Visitor Experience. Historian Allison Murphy will discuss the life and times of Winifred Carney.

Taking place at the James Connolly Visitor Centre, this will be an interactive guide through the life of James Connolly and the Visitor Centre itself. Booking is essential.
