Exciting plans for a 3,000-person outdoor seating area in Dublin’s Temple Bar

With outdoor dining being one of the first steps out of lockdown in Ireland, plans are for the creation of a new outdoor seating area in Dublin city centre.

Exciting plans for a 3,000-person outdoor seating area in Dublin’s Temple Bar are underway as the government looks towards Ireland’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Dublin City Council will discuss plans for the ambitious project later this month. Business owners hope to allow up to 3,000 customers to enjoy food and drinks on the streets of the city’s iconic quarter.

Restaurants, cafes, and pubs in the iconic area of Dublin have come up with plans for a 3,000-person outdoor seating area in Dublin’s Temple Bar.

The Irish Times report that plans will be submitted to Dublin City Council by The Temple Bar Company (TBC).

TBC submitted preliminary plans that propose 17 streets in the area be fitted with outdoor tables and chairs.

TBC suggested in a draft proposal that pedestrian squares and loading bays be transformed into outdoor seating areas.

The group also request that footpaths and road space – where space allows – are transformed into outdoor dining areas.

TBC submitted the plans for a 3,000-person outdoor seating area in Dublin’s Temple Bar. They hope to accommodate an expected influx of visitors when part of the city’s hospitality industry returns next month.

Dublin’s Fleet Street is expected to see the largest number of outdoor diners and 820 outdoor seats are proposed for the area.

Parliament Street will see 548 seats erected and they have proposed the erection of 482 seats for Essex Street East. They have proposed 400 seats for Meeting House Square and 296 for Temple Bar Square.

The Temple Bar Company hope that up to 140 cafes, bars, and restaurants in the area will benefit from the outdoor seating.

Outdoor dining will return across Ireland from 7 June. The Government have also waived fees for tables and chairs for the rest of this year.

Dublin City Council has welcomed the plans for a 3,000-person outdoor seating area in Dublin’s Temple Bar. A representative from the council said they “look forward to reviewing the documentation”.

In reviewing the plans, the council will consider a number of factors. Considerations include the safety of both customers and passersby and the concerns of local residents. They will also look at the ease of access for emergency services.

Dublin City Council refused permission when TBC submitted proposals for a similar scheme last December. However, the likelihood of increased outdoor dining in Dublin City Centre is looking much more positive this time around.

The proposals coincide with the beginning of a major pedestrianisation project in the city.

The plans include Anne Street South, South William Street, Drury Street, and Dame Court. These streets will all be either traffic-free or have traffic-free sections from 24 May.
