Though born in Italy, pizza truly is a universal dish. Cities with a large Italian diaspora have their own variations of the dish, while others simply hope to replicate it.

Ireland has no shortage of excellent pizza places, as popularity, critical acclaim, and awards will testify. However, one Dublin restaurant has been singled out as one of the best pizzerias in Europe, according to 50 Top Pizza.

50 Top Pizza is an Italian company that has been highlighting the best pizzerias across the world since 2017.

They chronicle the best pizzerias in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the USA. Italy, of course, has its own category.

Given that Italy is the home of pizza, we reckon 50 Top Pizza is pretty well placed as an authority on the best pizzerias in the world.

Having already crowned this year’s best pizzerias in Asia-Pacific and Latin America over the past two months, the ceremony for 2024’s European category took place on 13 May in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Fittingly, many of this year’s top ten came from Spain, with two restaurants from Madrid and two from Barcelona accounting for four of the top ten. Meanwhile, a London restaurant – Napoli on the Road, in Chiswick – claimed the top prize.

Elsewhere, pizzerias in Vienna, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Copenhagen received high ratings, and there was even room for a Dublin restaurant among the best pizzerias in Europe.

Little Pyg opened on the ground floor of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre on William Street South in 2019. It quickly garnered popular and critical acclaim, thanks to chefs who trained under Enzo Coccia, the first pizzaiolo listed in the Michelin Guide.

On top of its incredible pizzas, Little Pyg also offers beautiful pasta dishes, salads, and paninis, along with delicious cocktails – or ‘Pygtails’ – that change seasonally.

Top 50 Pizza reserved particular praise for Little Pyg’s “excellent pizzas […] made in the Neapolitan style, using high-quality ingredients sourced from Italy that are especially well-prepared”.

It continued, “The Spyci Little Pig with friggitelli (small Italian green peppers) is a true rarity in these parts, and the Carbonara is thoroughly convincing”.

If you fancy trying Little Pyg, the restaurant is open Monday–Thursday, 10 am–12 am; Friday and Saturday, 10 am–1 am; and Sunday, 12 pm–11 pm. Head here to book your table.
