Fancy an Irish city break with less hustle and bustle? Dublin has been named among the most relaxing cities in the world to visit.

Dublin named one of the most relaxing cities in the world.

Trying to decide between a city break and a relaxing holiday can prove quite difficult for travellers. But maybe some cities can offer both.

Research carried out by leading travel insurance company PayingTooMuch has revealed the most relaxing cities in the world to visit.

The list includes the Irish capital of Dublin among its top ten, but also mentions two Irish cities that are among the least relaxing in their region.

Travel insurance company PayingTooMuch analysed 50 cities worldwide to determine which is the most relaxing to visit.

They based their study on metrics including noise and light pollution (which they gave a score out of 100), traffic index, population density, number of walking trails and parks, quality of green spaces (out of 100), and a happiness score (out of 2,000).

PayingTooMuch’s study found Dublin to be the ninth-most relaxing and twelfth-happiest city in the world. Key to this was the city’s relatively low noise and light pollution levels and traffic index score.

Above all, however, the Irish capital has its quality green spaces and parks to thank, including urban oases, such as Phoenix Park and St. Stephen’s Green, and easy access to the likes of the Wicklow Mountains.

Dublin placed just above Prague in the top ten list. The rest of the list, in reverse order, consisted of Berlin, San Diego, Kyoto, Amsterdam, Honolulu, Melbourne, Vienna, and Sydney.

As a British company, PayingTooMuch conducted a second study focusing on the UK, including Northern Ireland. This study named two Irish cities among the least relaxing in the UK.

Belfast, the capital of the north, made the top ten least relaxing cities in the UK, owing mostly to its traffic index, according to the study.

However, the study found Derry to be the second-least relaxing city, behind only Manchester.

Though PayingTooMuch acknowledged that the Maiden City is home to “some pretty happy residents”, it pointed to a lack of quality green spaces and parks for its ranking as one of the least relaxing cities.
