Top travel publication names Dublin as one of the best cities in the world to visit in 2022.
An international travel publication has named Dublin one of the best cities to visit in 2022.
Lonely Planet has announced its annual ‘Best in Travel’ series. It highlights the must-see destinations and places to travel to this year.
Dublin ranks seventh in the best city to visit category in 2022 by the publication.
Why Dublin? – heritage and culture
Ireland’s capital city may be small compared to other countries. However, it has a considerable reputation. Heritage and culture exist around every corner of this magnificent city.
Lonely Planet says, “the real city Leopold walked around in 1922 on his Irish odyssey, with its Georgian squares, traditional pubs and warm people, is still there a century on”.
“Its long-established highlights are now complemented by new layers of community and diversity that add to the capital’s contemporary appeal”.
Dublin’s contemporary appeal – an award-winning personality
Visitors to Dublin will often talk about the character and personality that gives this capital city its charm.
“Garrulous, amiable, and witty, Dubliners at their ease are the greatest hosts of all, a charismatic bunch with compelling soul and sociability”.
The city’s personality is a major attraction when it comes to helping establish Dublin as one of the best cities to visit in 2022.
The awards – how it’s decided
This is the 16th edition of the ‘Best in Travel’ series, which advises people where they should travel next. A global community of experts determine the rankings, advising and curating a “collection of experiences that will inspire you to reconnect with the world”.
On their website, Lonely Planet states that their editors carefully select each location. They explain that they intend the list to “inspire and excite you, and help you make your 2022 travel dreams a reality”.
While the awards highlight some of the best places to visit in 2022, Lonely Planet has described the rankings as being “a bucket list for the future as it is a to-visit list for right now”.
Previous years – Ireland is no stranger to awards
The island of Ireland has been particularly successful in the Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel’ series.
In 2020, Galway ranked fourth best city to visit in the world. In 2016, Lonely Planet declared Dublin to be the third best city to visit in the world.
Not forgetting that Lonely Planet named Belfast and the Causeway Coast the number one region in the world to visit in 2018 and Ireland the fifth best country to visit in the world in 2015.
Other winners – how did other cities fare
The best cities to visit in 2022 are located worldwide, but only three other European cities made the list.
New Zealand’s capital, Auckland, tops the charts of the best cities to visit in 2022. Taipei in Taiwan is second place, followed closely by Freiburg in Germany. Atlanta (USA), Lagos (Nigeria), and Nicosia/Lefkosia (Cyprus) have all beaten Dublin (Ireland) in 7th place.
The remaining top ten cities to visit in 2022 is Mérida (Mexico), Florence (Italy), and Gyeongju (South Korea).
The best cities in the world aren’t the only category as part of the ‘Best in Travel’ series. Lonely Planet ranks Westfjords, Iceland, as the world’s best region to visit in 2022. Meanwhilr, they rated the Cook Islands the best country to visit in 2022.
