Belfast sun worshippers have a lot to celebrate as direct flights have been announced between Belfast and a popular Mexican resort.

Sun worshippers and holidaymakers in Belfast and across Ireland will delight in the announcement of a new direct flight linking the city with a popular Mexican resort destination.
Known for its all-inclusive resorts and pristine beaches, seats on board these flights probably won’t remain available for long!
Cancún – a popular Mexican resort destination

Cancún is a city in southeast Mexico, on the northeastern coast of the famous Yucatán Peninsula, just a stone’s throw away from the resort hotspot of the Riviera Maya.
The modern city was developed in the early 1970s as a government project to boost tourism. It now makes up, along with Acapulco, the two most popular Mexican resorts. Indeed, 2023 saw an unprecedented 21 million tourists visit the area.
More than just a resort – history and culture to explore

When you hear the word ‘resort’, you’d be forgiven for thinking of golden sands, sunshine in a blue sky, and a few poolside cocktails. But Cancún offers much more than margaritas and piña coladas.
Like much of Latin America, Cancún was once populated by native people – in this case, the Mayans – many of whom were brutally and systematically murdered by Spanish colonists.
Today, visitors to Cancún with an interest in the pre-colonisation history of the area can visit several Mayan archaeological sites, such as El Rey, El Meco, and San Miguelito.
Cancún is also within driving distance from the more well-known Mayan sites, Chichén Itzá, Tulum, and Cobá.
Belfast to Cancún – direct flights from Northern Ireland

Whether you want to explore the fascinating history of the area or simply want to hit the beach with a straw in something tropical, you can do so from Belfast next year.
Travel company TUI recently announced a new direct flight that will link the Northern Irish capital and the Mexican resort. Beginning 24 June 2025, a weekly flight will depart Belfast International Airport and touch down in Cancún every Tuesday for four weeks.
TUI’s Ireland chief Craig Morgan said, “We are delighted to welcome Mexico’s Caribbean Coast into our Summer 2025 programme from Belfast International Airport.
“This is the only direct flight available from Belfast to Mexico, and it will open up an exciting range of hotels and unique holiday experiences for Northern Ireland’s holidaymakers along Mexico’s stunning coastline”.
Morgan added that the announcement “demonstrates our ongoing commitment to give local holidaymakers access to a fantastic range of holiday destinations direct from Belfast”.
Belfast International Airport CEO Dan Owens commended TUI for “offering more seats to passengers than before the pandemic and [illustrating] their commitment to the local market” and hinted at the company’s “continued development in Belfast”.
