County Meath distillery, Boann Distillery, has become the first Irish whiskey to win the ‘best new make and young spirit’ award at the World Whiskies Awards 2021.

The family-run distillery bagged the prestigious award for its New Make Single Pot Still Spirit, which has proved a popular favourite among Irish whiskey fans.

As well as winning the award for ‘best new and young spirit’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2021, the County Meath distillery also won six awards in the national category just weeks earlier.

Boann Distillery founder Pat Cooney explained their whiskey-making process as a blend of the old whiskey production methods in copper pot stills with modern 21st-century nano-technology.

In a statement, Mr Cooney said, “It is an incredible achievement for our team that we have produced the best new make whiskey on the planet.”

Opened in 2016, Boann Distillery was the first distillery to open in Drogheda in over half a century, so it is great news for the County Meath distillery as they win at the World Whiskies Awards.

They currently employ just over 20 people at their €20m County Meath plant, but they have plans to open a new visitor centre, online shop, and release their new Silks Irish Gin, named after the nearby Bellewstown Races in Collierstown.

Last month, Boann released a collection of long-lost whiskey recipes using ingredients called ‘mashbills’ found by Dublin historian Fionnan O’Connor, which dated back to the 1800s.

The distillery has worked on the recipes and plans to release 144 casks to the public.
