Murphy’s latest film comes from the acclaimed author Claire Keegan who brought us Foster, the 2010 novel that was adapted on screen last year, the Oscar-nominated An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl).

The latest project is the adaptation of Keegan’s acclaimed novel Small Things Like These, published in 2021.

It has been reported that the movie is being financed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company Artists Equity.

Shooting is already underway in Ireland for Cillian Murphy’s latest film, Small Things Like These. The novel takes place in 1985 and is set in a small Irish town around Christmastime.

The book follows the story of a coal merchant and family man called Bill Furlong, who will be played by Cillian Murphy.

In the lead-up to Christmas, his busiest time of year, Bill makes a discovery concerning the Magdalene Laundries that makes him “confront secrets in his small Irish town”.

The project will also star Ciaran Hinds (Belfast) and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) and will be directed by Tim Mielants from a script by Enda Walsh.

It has also been reported that the movie is being financed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company Artists Equity.

Claire Keegan’s 2010 novel Foster made history this year when it became the first Irish language film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

Furthermore, it was one of the only Irish-language films to be screened in mainstream cinemas in Ireland and the UK.

When An Cailín Ciúin hit our screen this year, the Irish language was amidst somewhat of a modern revival as a record number of Irish films and filmmakers were nominated for awards at huge ceremonies like The Academy Awards and the BAFTAs.

Irish actors were speaking the language on the red carpet, something that warmed the hearts of the Irish all over the world.

Principal photography for Small Things Like These is underway in Ireland, with filming in County Wicklow expected to last for four weeks.

In late 2022, shooting locations for the film were sought in New Ross County Wexford, as well. The Irish buzz of film and TV is well underway, with absolutely no plans of stopping it seems.

While Cillian Murphy’s movie is afoot, Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter have been touring Ireland for their latest movie, Four Letters of Love.

Earlier this week, Brosnan was spotted at the Ponderosa Bar, Ireland’s highest pub, on the Glenshane Pass in County Derry. While earlier in the year, he was spotted filming in the South Belfast area, too.
